Lenovo recalls ThinkPad gear over fire risk

Lenovo has recalled the batteries from 31 models of its popular Thinkpad notebook computer range due to a fire hazard.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission announced that lithium-ion batteries for ThinkPad notebooks sold from 1 February 2010 to 30 June 2012 could overheat and poses a fire and burn risk for users.

The batteries may have been included with notebooks, given out as stand-alone replacement packs or sold individually.

The affected Lenovo ThinkPad models are T410, T420, T510, T520, W510, W520, X100E, X121e, X130e, X131e, X201, X201s, X220, X220t, Edge 11, Edge 13, Edge 14, Edge 15, Edge 320, Edge 420, Edge 430, Edge 520, Edge 525, Edge 530, L412, L420, L512, L520, Mini 10, SL410 and SL510.

The batteries to be recalled have the assembly-part numbers of 42T4695, 42T4695, 42T4711, 42T4711, 42T4740, 42T4740, 42T4798, 42T4798, 42T4804, 42T4804, 42T4812, 42T4812, 42T4816, 42T4816, 42T4822, 42T4822, 42T4826, 42T4826, 42T4828, 42T4828, 42T4834, 42T4834, 42T4840, 42T4840, 42T4862 and 42T4862.

Lenovo customers with an affected battery are advised to "immediately turn off their computer, remove the battery and only power the computer through the AC adaptor and power cord".

The vendor has also created a website that provides information on the recall and a means to arrange for a free replacement battery.
