Kaseya tracks down stolen laptop in Melbourne.

A thief who stole a laptop out of a car was caught after being tracked by Kaseya's remote management tool.

In June, Navigatum had a client in Melbourne that reported it had a laptop stolen out of a client employee's car.

The team moved to set up some alerts using Kaseya to see if someone was the using the computer.

One of Kaseya's tech support guys shared some scripts on how to get some screen grabs and even web-cam pics from the stolen laptop, all unbeknown to the thief.

Following these instructions, Navigatum was able to set up an alert so whenever the stolen laptop logged in to the internet the software would send him an email.

Navigatum installed the Kaseya agents that then allowed it to connect to systems and to backup and provide scripts.

"Towards the end of June the system started reporting back; somebody was online," senior network technician David Stevenson told CRN.

"We were able to grab screenshots, he was getting online at all weird hours at one or two in the morning.

"It was towards the end of July that he started logging in to his Facebook account the keyloggers tracked his keystrokes and we were able to check it out.

"We sent it to the police and within an hour they caught and charged the implicated [person]."

Two other offenders were also caught, he added.

Stevenson said the Police were helpful and his client was stoked. "They had written off the laptop and insurance didn't cover it either," he said.
