BANGALORE (Reuters) - Juniper Networks Inc, which makes gear to speed up or protect internet data traffic, said on Wednesday it planned to more than double staff at its engineering centre in Bangalore.

"By the end of next year or early 2007 we should be maxed out at 675," Sam Srinivas, chief technologist at Juniper's Bangalore centre, told Reuters after the company inaugurated an US$8.5 million facility.

It currently employs 300 engineers, who constitute about 10 percent of Juniper's global engineering workforce.

Last month, Juniper's main rival, Cisco Systems broke ground for a new US$50 million Bangalore technical facility with a capacity to take 3000 employees.

Cisco, which like Juniper is also targeting customers in India's exploding telecommunications sector, currently has 1400 engineers in India.
