JB Hi-fi has taken up the vacant retail spots left behind by Dick Smith in Sydney International Airport.
The electronics retailer signed a six-and-a-half year deal with airport retail partner Heinemann Tax and Duty Free to become the exclusive technology partner for the airport.
CRN understands that JB Hi-Fi has already opened four stores at the Sydney International Airport. JB Hi-Fi and Heinemann both acknowledged the support from the airport to prepare the four locations within just ten days.
JB Hi-Fi chief executive Richard Murray said: “Heinemann and Sydney Airport have been working together to create a world class Duty Free precinct and JB Hi-Fi is looking forward to being part of this exciting development.”
Dick Smith formerly operated four fashion-focused technology concept ‘Move by Dick Smith’ stores in the airport, before falling into administration and receivership in January. The four outlets were closed in March after receivers Ferrier Hodgson failed to find a buyer.
In its 2015 financial year report, Dick Smith said its airport stores were “exceeding expectations” with comparable sales up by “double digits”. A fifth Move store was planned to open in December 2015.
The closure led to the loss of 48 jobs, joining the 2,460 staff already let go when Dick Smith closed its doors last week.
