After its launch on 11 July, one million iPhone 3G had been sold in just three days.
“iPhone 3G had a stunning opening weekend,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “It took 74 days to sell the first one million original iPhones, so the new iPhone 3G is clearly off to a great start around the world.”
The boost in sales could probably also be attributed to the fact the 3G iPhone was launched in 21 countries last Friday, while the original iPhone was only launched in about six countries.
Apple also announced that iPhone users had downloaded over 10 million applications from the new App Store which also launched on Friday. The store has more than 800 applications currently available, with more than 200 offered for free.
According to Jobs, the new iPhone 3G combines all the features of the first generation iPhone plus 3G networking and built-in GPS for expanded location-based mobile services. The device also includes iPhone 2.0 software which supports Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync.
