IBM serves up Wimbledon mobile apps

IBM has unveiled a series of iPhone and mobile applications designed to provide up-to-the-minute information about the Wimbledon tennis tournament starting next week.

The new iPhone application, available now on iTunes, will deliver the latest scores, order of play, a daily news feed and video highlights.

IBM also launched a Seer Aggregator application, which will give users a real-time Twitter feed from players, journalists and a team of IBM scouts.

The company has also designed a new app for the G1 Android-based mobile phone which uses a live feed from the device's camera, and superimposes content and data relevant to the view being displayed.

The user has only to point the camera at the Centre Court, for example, to receive maps, order of play and relevant Twitter feeds, according to IBM.

"People are going to web sites less and less and they expect content to come to them," said Alan Flack, client executive for the All England Lawn Tennis Club.

"This is especially true of the younger generation of users, so we have tried to facilitate this. We try to balance things that work and look polished with a couple of things which push the boundaries."
