Long time Harvey Norman computer and communications GM John Slack-Smith has moved upstairs to become the retailer’s chief operating officer, effective last week.
He will be replaced by right hand man, business manager, computers and communications, Rutland Smith, a former Harvey Norman franchisee and veteran of the Australian IT market. Smith confirmed Slack-Smith's promotion with CRN this week.
Slack-Smith was appointed as computers GM in July 1999. Prior to his appointment, he operated his own business as a Harvey Norman computer franchisee for eight years.
During his tenure, Slack-Smith presided over Harvey Norman’s billion dollar IT business, capturing around 40 percent of Australia’s IT retail market.
Slack-Smith was not available for comment at press time.
