The federal government will review arrangements for telecommunications in new property developments to encourage more competition and improved connectivity.
Through the Department of Communications, the government is seeking comments and feedback on the Telecommunications in New Developments (TIND) policy, which was signed in March 15.
The review comes amid the NBN’s target completion date of 2020, and the government wants to ensure people moving into new developments get access to timely telco infrastructure.
Federal minister for communications, cyber safety and the arts Paul Fletcher said while the broad approach in the policy remains appropriate for the future, the government wants to hear from the public on whether there are areas of improvement.
“Telecommunications is a key part of everyday life and we want to make sure that people moving into new properties have ready access to modern telecommunications services,” Fletcher said.
“The current policy is now almost five years old, and a lot has changed in the sector. NBN Co is now the fixed-line network provider for the majority of the population and the National Broadband Network is on track for completion in mid-2020, making it timely to review the policy.”
Fletcher is encouraging interested parties to make a submission by 5:00 PM on 17 January 2020.
