A federal government-funded joint cybersecurity space was officially opened in Sydney today, with the aim of promoting collaboration on security policies across government, business and academia.
The space is part of the Australian government’s $47 million Joint Cyber Security Centre (JCSC) program, which facilitates stronger partnerships between organisations across private and public sectors.
“This is an important step to enhance Australia’s defensive cyber capabilities,” Law enforcement and cybersecurity minister Angus Taylor said.
“The JCSC is a critical hub for business and government to improve their cybersecurity practices and share information in a trusted environment.”
Leading the program is the Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) Australia, whose objective is to establish cybersecurity centres in key cities across Australia through the Government’s 2016 Cyber Security Strategy.
The official launch follows the Sydney centre's soft opening in December, joining the other centres in Brisbane, Perth and Melbourne. Another centre is due to open in Adelaide later this year.
Taylor added that the centres have already run a number of cybersecurity exercises in the lead up to the Commonwealth Games.
“Cybersecurity threats are always evolving, so we need to ensure we have a range of strategies in place to protect our digital borders and get on the offensive against cyber attacks,” Taylor said.
