Fujitsu has launched its Internet of Things platform in Australia with support for a product that will connect sensors to Oracle, SAP and other software.
The services giant has outlined plans to use its extensive services capability, which crosses application services, infrastructure eservices, and hardware, to get behind the iOT trend in Australia.
Central to this is news Fujitsu will offer local support for its iMotion Edgeware platform, a software layer used to connect and manage sensors. The system turns the raw data into information used by ERP and other backend systems.
Essentially a workflow engine, iMotion Edgeware is already being used by a police department in the USA to track items like guns and other equipment. Police use a handheld scanner to check items before starting a shift, which speeds up the process of accounting for equipment.
The system can also be used by maintenance crews, tracking where tools are used, automatically updating inventory systems.
The company is using the full force of its services practice to sell the message, with a presentation to media and analysts this week that other local vendors would be less likely to provide a “robust full service implementation and management capability.”
While Fujitsu Australia’s vice president of major bids, solutions and marketing in Oceania, Bridget Murphy admitted the Internet of Things was a “bit of a buzzword”, she pointed to Fujitsu’s $10 million upgrade of one of its Australian data centres in Perth and Fujitsu’s acquisition of IoT company GlobeRanger, which is behind the iMotion product as evidence the trend is real.
Fujitsu also announced a new security services practice in Australia and New Zealand. The practice offers professional services complimented by managed security services from Fujitsu's Security Operations Centre in Sydney.
