According to research by analyst firm, Heavy Reading, the company rose to number three behind Cisco and Alcatel-Lucent.

"In the current economic situation organisations need to ensure they select high quality suppliers that can deliver significant total cost of ownership (TCO) benefits, and this is a precise fit with Extreme Networks’ capabilities, which I will be promoting vigorously," said Simon Barnard, regional director A/NZ, Extreme Networks.

Barnard said the news was a timely impetus for his expansion plans for the region.

“We are actively looking to expand our channel partners to provide greater coverage nationally and to broaden our market coverage,” he said.

“The current economic climate is squeezing system integrators profits and we are able to offer them significant cost savings with our range of Ethernet switches that will enable them to grow their business and margins.

“We have a small focused sales team in Australia/New Zealand which will be increased shortly and then again in the new fiscal year to meet our business goals.”

Extreme Networks’ portfolio of carrier solutions provides metro core, edge and aggregation Ethernet transport solutions.

The recently unveiled BlackDiamond 20808 switch is purpose-built for metro Ethernet transport networks.

“The carrier Ethernet market is driven by a steady transformation, replacing expensive legacy technologies with Ethernet due to its flexibility, performance and price,” said Stan Hubbard, industry analyst for Heavy Reading.

“The recent growth of Extreme Networks’ market share reflects the success of their increased focus on the needs of the carrier market.”
