Telefon AB L.M. Ericsson swung to a profit in its second quarter on an 18 percent increase in sales.

The Swedish telecommunications-equipment maker said net income for the quarter ended 30 June was $710.5 million[US], compared with a net loss of $359.4 million[US] in the same period a year ago.

Sales increased to $4.3 billion[US] from $3.7 billion[US].

Carl-Henric Svanberg, president and chief executive of Ericsson, said in a statement that confidence had returned to the industry.

"With new and expansion contracts across all regions we are capitalising on our technology leadership, our large installed base as well as our particularly strong position in high-growth markets," Svanberg said.

Ericsson reiterated its earlier forecast for "slight to moderate growth" this year in the mobile systems market, which should translate into "good growth" for professional services.
