Ericsson apologises for Telstra Wholesale outage

Global technology vendor Ericsson has taken responsibility for an outage that struck Telstra's wholesale operations, affecting users of ALDI and Woolworths mobile services.

Telstra confirmed to CRN that a number of users were experiencing “intermittent” outages on its wholesale network due to a “vendor platform issue”.

“There was a vendor platform issue that impacted mobile virtual network operating services for a small number of wholesale customers,” the spokesperson said.

“The majority of those services have already been restored. We apologise to these wholesale customers for any inconvenience.”

In a statement obtained by News Corp, Swedish technology giant Ericsson apologised for the outage.

"Ericsson today experienced an issue with the platform it provides to Telstra Wholesale to support its mobiles business."

“During this time some Telstra Wholesale end users may not have been able to connect their services. The issue has been resolved and we are working to investigate the cause of this incident.”

Telstra yesterday took to Twitter to address reports of an outage, clarifying that the issue was not nationwide.

The AussieOutages website said reports of outages started as early as 9.14am AEST, with Telstra’s outages page also reporting a number of issues in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Darwin and Hobart.

ALDImobile, one of the mobile virtual network operators affected, confirmed the outage on Tuesday morning and said full restoration of service was expected midday. Woolworths Mobile and Telstra's low-cost subsidiary, Belong, also admitted problems being faced by some users.

The outages come at a delicate time for the telco, whose share price dropped to a historic low. It is set to provide a "Strategy Update to the market" on Wednesday 20 June.

Some analysts expect Telstra to announce cost cutting if it wants to see its share price recover from recent losses.

Earlier this month, a damaged Telstra fibre optic cable caused an internet outage in a number of Sydney suburbs and Dubbo.

The telco was also hit by a widespread outage in May, taking down 3G and 4G mobile voice and data services across the country.
