eBay shoppers turn mobile

Australian consumers bought more than one million items on eBay using a mobile device this year, eBay research has revealed.

87,000 Australians bought 220,000 items via eBay on their mobile devices in July compared to 44,000 who bought 98,000 items in January.

In a breakdown of device types, the research found that eBay iPhone app users bought nearly 900,000 items worth over $56 million with an average price per item of $64.

Customers accessing eBay via WAP bought over 160,000 items worth more than $17 million with an average price per item of $102.

While Android app users bought more than 1,000 items worth over $52,000 with an average price per item of $21 and eBay Blackberry app users bought nearly 600 items worth over $50,000 with an average price per item of $41.

Deborah Sharkey, managing director at eBay Australia and New Zealand, said people have realised that they can buy goods anywhere and at anytime.

"In fact, eBay mobile sales are growing faster in Australia than in any other eBay market with one item bought every 15 seconds," she said.

Nearly 25 percent of Australians use their mobile phone to shop online, with a third doing it more than once a week.

The research was conducted by Pure Profile on behalf of eBay between 14-20 September 2010.
