DXC Technology has completed a major SAP S/4Hana enterprise resource planning (ERP) system for Whitehaven Coal, enabling the Australian coal producer to double its operational size in just six months.

The project, which focused on Whitehaven's newly acquired Daunia and Blackwater mine sites, modernised critical functions including human resources, finance, procurement and payroll.

Transition to and integration with new systems, as well as proiding business analysis, organisational change mangement and security services was also done by DXC.

The implementation, which went live on April 1 this year, saw DXC manage the transition and integration of systems for over 2000 employees and 150 applications.

This rapid deployment highlights the growing importance of technology in enabling swift business transformations within the mining sector.

DXC's president of Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa, Seelan Nayagam, said technology was critical in Whitehaven's business integration and at heart of the coal producer's business integration.

"By leveraging our [DXC's] deep technology experience, we successfully helped Whitehaven double its size and transition a workforce of more than 2000 and systems running over 150 applications, with minimal disruption to production," Nayagam said.

The project's success was attributed to Whitehaven's early engagement with DXC, which included a feasibility study for the technology requirements of the acquisition.

Nayagam noted that Whitehaven's leadership and vision "to drive genuine engagement across the business" was crucial in ensuring readiness to utilise technology as an enabler.

The miniing industry is increasingly relying on advanced ERP systems to streamline operations and facilitate rapid growth, and the deployment highlights the ongoing digital transformation in the sector.

Companies like Whitehaven Coal leverage technology to enhance operational efficiency and support business expansion, and to adapt to changing market conditions.
