Brisbane-based storage services provider Digital Sense will migrate the Brisbane City Council 1300 virtual machines in what it claims to be one of the biggest cloud migrations in Queensland to date.
The council's IT environment is currently located across two data centres owned by the council and will be migrated to Digital Sense's vCloud Data Centre Grid.
Digital Sense's vCloud Data Centre Grid connects Brisbane's 13 major co-location facilities.
Agim Isai, Digital Sense's chief executive, said: "We run VMware vCloud and NSX technologies to create one large software-defined data centre delivering less than 2 milliseconds latency across all data centres."
Digital Sense has scored the contract, for an undisclosed value, with the council to provide cloud services initially for three years. By June 2017, Digital Sense expects to have migrated 25 percent of the council's platform.
"This is a wonderful outcome for a local provider to be chosen. It means we can provide a direct benefit back into the economy by recruiting local talent to deliver these services," added Agim.
As part of the contract, Digital Sense will provide all design, transition and ongoing management of the cloud infrastructure.
The Brisbane City Council is the largest local government in Australia with 26 wards and 27 councillor positions.
Digital Sense owns and operates its own 1600sqm data centre facility supported by "highly available uninterrupted" power and cooling.
