CRN US recently reported that Dell's plan to sell Vostro desktops and notebooks through distributors Ingram Micro and Tech Data in the US.
Greg Davis, vice president and general manager of Dell's Global Commercial Channels, said he had been asked by direct channel partners for a distribution relationship in which partners can get preconfigured PCs within a 24-48 hour period.
"Our partners tell us that working directly with Dell is a great thing," he said.
"They enjoy doing that, but there are cases where they need a product and need it quickly. Ingram Micro and Tech Data meet that need."
The distribution agreement will see Ingram carry 11 desktop configurations and three notebook configurations.
Davis said the agreement will soon be extended to Canada and eventually to other geographies and include more product lines.
However Dell Australia's media representative told CRN there were no plans to bring the channel strategy to this region.
"When we launched our PartnerDirect channel program in Australia, our approach wasn't to look at distribution because we are building a direct relationship with resellers," they said.
"So we have no news for Australia at this time."
