Dell's board of directors tapped Kevin Rollins, its current president, to assume the additional title of CEO from founder Michael Dell, the company said Thursday.
Michael Dell will maintain his role as chairman of the Texas-based company and oversee trends and customer preferences. Rollins will continue to oversee company strategy and day-to-day operations, the company said.
In a statement, the company said the title change is consistent with the responsibilities Michael Dell and Rollins had both been performing. The changes were announced at a Dell board meeting in New York and will take effect at Dell's shareholder meeting July 16, the company said.
Rollins joined Dell in 1996 and held several management positions before being named as the company's president and COO in 2001. During Rollins' tenure as second-in-command at the direct PC vendor, Dell has re-emerged from the industry downturn by entering new markets including storage, printing and consumer electronics.
