Dell EMC's backup company Spanning announces Australian move to AWS Sydney

Dell EMC's backup and recovery company Spanning has announced that Sydney will host its first Australian data centre.

Spanning will offer its global software-as-a-service (SaaS) data protection solution for Office 365 to Australian and New Zealand customers.

This is Spanning's second data centre outside the US following the launch of the Dublin, Ireland, data centre in September 2016.

Spanning has chosen Amazon Web Services' Sydney facility as its services are built on AWS. When a customer starts a free trial or a new subscription with Spanning they can choose if they want their data stored in Australia, Europe or North America.

A company spokesperson told CRN: "We leverage AWS auto-scale compute services and various platform services to deliver backup and recovery for Microsoft Office 365."

The data centre offers customers compliance with the Australian Privacy Principles enforced by the Privacy Act at the same time it provides low latency and efficiency for local customers.

Spanning Backup for Office 365 is designed to keep SaaS-based data within the region while in transit and at rest. Spanning also provides backup for G Suite and Salesforce data to customers across the region.

The SaaS solution protects data from sync errors, malicious acts and human error, which are not covered by Office 365.

Production company Endemol Shine Australia's head of IT Barry Zanelli said: "We realised we needed a third-party backup solution after it came to our attention that Microsoft could not protect against data losses stemming from problems occurring on our side and when we started our search, no competitor even came close to measuring up to Spanning."

Spanning was established in 2009 and has dedicated sales personnel in Australia who work with Dell EMC employees, as well as through distributors Avnet, Ingram Micro and Sydney-based cloud services provider iQ3.
