Datacom resells 15,000 Acer Google Chromebooks to Australian Capital Territory

The ACT Department of Education has enlisted Datacom to roll out 15,000 Acer Chromebooks to schools in Canberra.

The devices procured, Acer Chromebook Spin 11s, were touted as rugged and versatile convertible notebooks, designed for extensive use in education. The PCs come equipped with a Wacom EMR stylus, allowing students to use them to mimic drawing on pen and paper. The device can reportedly withstand drops from 122cm and can ensure 330ml of spilled water by channelling wayward liquid away from core components.

The purchase, announced by ACT education minister Yvette Berry today, is hoped to deliver modern devices and support students requiring research, problem-solving and critical thinking skills, according to the government.

Acer’s Oceanic regional sales director Rod Bassi said the vendor was thrilled to be selected as the supplier.

"Our incredible Acer Spin 11 product solution, our strong supply chain and reference ability in other large Education departments across Australia together with our team partnership with Datacom ACT made our approach and solution a true team partnership. Acer is proud to be such a large part of Minister Berry’s technology initiative and we look forward to making it a great success”, he said.

The move follows a major win for Google, when the ACT announced in 2015 that the territory schools would move headlong to Google services, spanning Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, email and "other modern online communication tools".

Dialog IT was the chosen partner to drive that migration, which at the time included 1000 Chromebooks out of a $1.5 million device allocation fund, with many more students running Google Apps on their personal devices.
