Data#3 to migrate 90,000 govt users to Microsoft Azure, Office 365 collaboration platform

Data#3 has scored a contract to replace the Department of Finance's 12-year-old file sharing and collaboration platform in a six-month deal worth $656,000.

The government put the call out for a replacement for Govdex in later 2016, the whole-of-government platform established in 2006 that allows staff from all levels of government, educational institutions and not-for-profits to share files, create and manage discussion groups and issue projects.

According to Department of Finance CIO John Sheridan, there are more than 90,000 registered Govdex users and 18,000 active users in any three-month period across 6000 groups.

Data#3 will replace the platform with a new software-as-a-service solution in the public cloud-based Microsoft Azure and Office 365.

Sheridan said in a blog post that the collaboration software had evolved significantly since Govdex was first introduced, and that the new platform aimed to develop a service driven by user needs.

Some of the anticipated new features include real-time collaboration with document co-authoring and instant messaging; online profiles with social features like discoverability and public skills and communities with the option of open, semi-private or private communities.

"The new Govdex will provide government employees and their industry partners with a modern collaboration environment through which they can connect, interact, and coordinate work efforts, seamlessly, across organisational and geographical boundaries. This will help drive public sector productivity and innovation," Sheridan said.

Data#3 chief executive Laurence Baynham added: “We are delighted to work with the Department of Finance on this innovative initiative. It is a great example of how leveraging people and technology can help to drive digital transformation in the public sector. We look forward to assisting the Department in achieving their business goals.”
