Cognizant commits to 5,000 AI-certified engineers and 10,000 business operators

Cognizant has announced a workforce investment to scale its Frontier-certified talent to 5,000 Frontier Certified Engineers and 10,000 Frontier Business Operators, with the first deployment-ready cohort due in the fourth quarter of 2026.

The programme is designed around two complementary tracks.

Frontier Certified Engineers architect and build agentic systems, engineer retrieval and context layers, and take ongoing accountability for systems after go-live. Frontier Business Operators manage hybrid human-and-digital delivery environments, running agent fleets and human teams against committed outcomes in real time.

Cognizant said the investment addresses what it describes as a $4.5 trillion gap between what AI can deliver and what enterprises actually realise from their spending - a gap it attributes to people and process shortfalls rather than compute or infrastructure.

The company said it plans to supplement the programme with annual direct hires of what it calls "Frontier-native" talent from universities in the United States and globally.

The Frontier model is described as cloud- and model-agnostic, with certified pods working across a partner footprint that includes Anthropic, OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, AWS, NVIDIA, Salesforce and ServiceNow.

Cognizant said certification is credentialled directly by frontier-model companies, covering tools including GitHub Copilot, Google Gemini, Anthropic's Claude and OpenAI's Codex.

The investment will also expand Cognizant's SkillSpring programme and fund embedded client engagements worldwide. Cognizant said the broader talent pipeline runs from AI-fluency training across hundreds of thousands of associates through to 40,000 people in Frontier certification.

“Closing the AI outcome gap demands talent who not only understands a client’s industry deeply but can also reimagine the way work is structured and take end-to-end responsibility for delivering results in collaboration with clients, on any model or cloud the client selects,” said Ravi Kumar S, chief executive at Cognizant.

“That is what a Frontier workforce does. By taking accountability for outcomes rather than stopping at technology deployment, we can help clients accelerate measurable results while managing risk. Cognizant’s industry context and experience position us uniquely to unlock the value that has remained out of reach during this shift toward outcome-based delivery and a new chapter in human capital."
