Research firm IDC has named Computer Associates the global leader in the administration, authorisation and authentication software market for the third consecutive year.

In a report just released, 'Worldwide Security 3A Software Forecast Update and Competitive Vendor Shares 2002-2007: Identity Management Takes Shape', IDC assessed global software vendor Computer Associates at 16 percent of the 3A - administration, authorisation and authentication - world market, with its revenue from the 3As growing twice as fast as the overall industry average.

'Computer Associates has shown healthy growth and an extensive global footprint in the security 3A market ... Computer Associates is clearly offering products customers see as suitable,' said Brian Burke, research manager at IDC in the US.

IDC expected global revenues from 3A security software sales to hit US$5.1 billion by 2007, with growth compounding annually at 15.3 percent in that period. Security management software sales alone were expected to grow from last year's US$753 million to US$2.6 billion in 2007.

Computer Associates 3A product category includes its eTrust Admin for user account management, eTrust Access Control for policy-based access administration, eTrust Web Access Control for securing Web services and resources, and eTrust Single Sign-On. The company claimed to be moving away from blocking-based approaches to intelligent risk management systems in its software.

Russell Artzt, executive eTrust portfolio vice president at Computer Associates, said identity and access management were as important as virus prevention and vulnerability management.
