Australian enterprises use multi-cloud: Forrester research

Australian enterprises are increasingly adopting multiple cloud providers despite economic pressures, with 90 per cent now using more than one cloud service to run their business, new research shows.

Forrester study found companies are seeking to spread risk and reduce costs by using multiple providers rather than relying on a single cloud platform.

"The presence of major global hyperscalers and their investment in Australia and New Zealand demonstrates the importance of the local market both economically and, increasingly, geopolitically," Sam Higgins principal analyst at Forrester said.

The research revealed 14 per cent of Australian cloud decision-makers plan to modernise core applications in 2024 using technologies like Kubernetes and artificial intelligence.

Some organisations reported a 200 per cent return on investment within six months through optimising their cloud spending and resource allocation.

Companies are also adopting hybrid approaches that combine cloud and on-premises systems to maintain control while meeting regulatory requirements.

The report highlighted sustainability as a growing priority, with cloud providers emphasising green energy initiatives to reduce environmental impact.

The Australian and New Zealand cloud market faces challenges including unevenly distributed data centres and evolving regulations, though new facilities are planned outside southeastern Australia.

Cloud providers are expanding their regional presence, with new data centres being built and additional companies entering the market.
