Australian organisations are turning to the channel for cloud management services and skills due to increasing cloud adoption, citing gaps in the cloud skills market.
According to research from Telsyte, 37 percent of large organisations have outsourced their cloud management to third parties. There's more to come: Telsyte said the cloud infrastructure-as-a-service market is expected to reach $1.2 billion by 2022.
“Australia’s adoption of cloud must be supported by skilled professionals, however there is still a gap in the market for cloud skills,” Telsyte said.
The number is based on current cloud spending and further increases in IT budgets, with organisations shelling out $688 million for cloud IaaS in 2018, and budgets expected to increase at an average of 6 percent this year, up from 4.8 percent in 2018.
The research firm said cloud maturity is “rapidly increasing” in Australia, with 84 percent of organisations with a strategic approach to cloud computing and 24 percent with mature practices that are able to move workloads from on-premises to cloud.
Use of multi-cloud setups has increased, with 77 percent of organisations using more than one cloud platform, while 49 percent use at least four platforms.
Enterprise resource planning (ERP) and big data are big drivers of cloud adoption, with 65 percent of organisations using either fully or partially cloud-based ERP systems, while 85 percent of large organisations are using some form of cloud storage or compute for their main big data analytics programs.
Meanwhile security is serving both a challenge and driver for cloud adoption, with 42 percent of organisations having security concerns, while 40 percent cited security as their reason for adopting cloud-based applications.
