Apple to axe Messages on OS X Lion

Apple has informed customers that its Messages beta program for OS X Lion will be terminated on December 14th.

Apple fans who want to carry on using the Messages service will have to fork out $US19.99 for the OS X Mountain Lion upgrade from the App Store. Only those with newer iMacs will be able to do so.

Messages replaced iChat in OS X Mountain Lion. It is Apple's Mac version of its mobile iMessage client.

In an email to users, Apple thanked its customers for participating in the beta program and directed them to its online store to purchase the operating system, reported MacRumours.
