Apple could be on brink of releasing iOS4 update

Apple is planning to issue an update for its iOS4 software, according to widespread reports.

Aside from struggling to keep up with the overwhelming demand for the iPhone 4, Apple has had to issue advice to users on how to improve the device's reception, and fend off a string of complaints about bugs.

An Apple posting on its tech support forum confirmed an OS 4.0.1 software fix addressing the issues with the operating system would be out sometime this week, possibly as early as today, according to Apple Insider. However, any mention of this appears to have now been taken down from the Apple forum.

MacRumours has gone further by posting a screenshot of an email which is claimed to be from chief executive Steve Job stating: “There is no reception issue. Stay tuned.”

V3.co.uk contacted Apple to ask whether an 4.01 update for iOS4 was imminent and also asked confirmation as to whether the signal strength problem was hardware or software related.

Apple had not responded at the time of publication, however it is unlikely that Apple officials would use a support forum to release highly sensitive information such as this.

The company previously tried to play down the signal problems, with Steve Jobs suggesting to one user that he should grip the phone in a different way to avoid reception issues.

The official advice from Apple is to buy one of the 'bumpers' available for £25 (A$43.35) , which clip over the stainless steel band and help to resolve the reception issues.
