Microsoft has admitted there's a flaw in its latest round of Patch Tuesday updates - but it's not the one a reader reported to us yesterday.
Microsoft released its September round of updates on Tuesday, with three of the Office patches getting stuck in an installation loop.
Now the company has admitted another issue with a different bulletin - KB2817630 - which is causing problems in Outlook, causing the navigation pane to render incorrectly, "typically extremely large to the point that the navigation pane is 'invisible' to the user," the company said.
"Shortly after publishing the September Public Update, we received notifications of a potential issue with Outlook 2013 after installing the non-security update KB2817630," Microsoft said on the Office blog.
"Based on those reports we immediately removed the patch from Microsoft Update. If you haven’t already downloaded or installed the patch, you will not have these problems or be offered the problematic patch."
The flaw is down to version discrepancies between Outlook.exe and mso.dll. "The incompatible state is created by installing either the September Public Update OR the August Cumulative update, but not both," it said.
The issue only affects MSI installations of Office or Outlook 2013 - which are volume-license versions normally found in businesses. It only affects Office 2013 Standard and Office 2013 Professional Plus, not Home & Student or Professional.
To fix the problem, Microsoft will be reissuing the September Patch Update, or users can follow the steps detailed on the blog post to uninstall either the related August or the September bulletin.
The company has yet to acknowledge the other issues with the Patch Tuesday updates, but apologised for this one.
"We are very careful with public updates given their wide and rapid proliferation," the company added. "We regret any inconvenience caused by this update, and we are hopeful that this information can help you restore productivity in Outlook products."
