Chip maker Advanced Micro Devices has begun shipping two new low-power 64-bit mobile processors, hoping it can continue to push its AMD64 technology into the high-growth notebook space.
AMD said Thursday that two new chips, the Athlon 64 2700++ and the Athlon 64 2800++, consume less power than previous processors and allow for integration into thinner and lighter form factors.
The chips will include enhanced virus protection that AMD says will be enabled by the forthcoming Windows XP Service Pack 2 from Microsoft.
AMD has set pricing on the processors at US$209 for the Athlon 64 2700++ and US$241 for the Athlon 64 2800++, based on shipments of 1,000-unit quantities each.
Among notebook vendors, AMD said Acer is implementing the processors in its Ferrari line of mobile PCs.
