AMD boosts CPU range with AM1

AMD has announced the introduction of its AM1 platform which features the AMD quad-core and dual-core “Kabini” Accelerated Processing Unit, or APU, into the component channel for system builders.

“Kabini” desktops and components are slated for global availability on April 9.

Combined with motherboards from leading manufacturers including ASRock, ASUS, Gigabyte and MSI the new AM1 platform will deliver the Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture and AMD “Jaguar” CPU cores.

AMD says that this will create an ecosystem of flexible and upgradable platforms that also feature USB 3.0 and SATA 6GB/s support on microATX and miniITX motherboards used in small form factor PCs. The AMD AM1 platform also offers DirectX 11.2 and Windows 8.1 support.

The AM1 platform will be branded with the AMD Athlon and AMD Sempron APU monikers.
