Alibaba, Baidu, Tencent and Xiaomi top Gartner's list of Asia-Pacific's biggest digital disrupters

Often overshadowed by major US digital giants like Google, Facebook, Amazon and Apple, disruptive digital businesses in the Asia-Pacific region represent both a threat and an opportunity for global enterprises, according to Gartner.

The analyst firm, which is hosting its Gartner Symposium/ITxpo on the Gold Coast in Brisbane this week, has revealed its top 10 digital disrupters in the Asia-Pacific region.

Gartner defined a digital disruptor as “any entity that affects the shift of fundamental expectations and behaviors in a culture, market, industry or process that is caused by, or expressed through, digital capabilities, channels or assets”.

Gartner’s top 10 digital disrupters in Asia-Pacific are:

1. Tencent
2. Alibaba
3. Baidu
4. Ant Financial
5. JD.com
6. DiDi
7. Xiaomi
8. Yahoo Japan
9. Naver
10. Lufax

Gartner determined the top companies by considering the three factors of scale, reach and richness in measuring the businesses impact on technology, business, industry and society.

"Prioritising global IT investments will be incomplete without a thorough study of Asia Pacific digital disruptors within clear categories of opportunities," said Gartner research director CK Lu

"GDP growth in Asia Pacific is 1.6 times faster than the worldwide market. Adoption of technologies like mobile wallets is much higher, and you can reach 1.7 billion internet users in these markets. As Chinese and American digital giants battle to disrupt global markets, no one can afford to sit on the sidelines."

Gartner says more than 23,000 CIOs, senior business and IT leaders worldwide are set to have gathered in the Gold Coast for the symposium.
