Adobe shuts down support for PowerPC products

Adobe has announced that its Creative Suite product line will in the future only be available for Apple systems based around Intel’s processors.

The move is another nail in the coffin for the PowerPC product line, since the creative community has long been a major component of the Apple user base. The lack of support will mean a key industry segment will have to upgrade its systems to keep using Apple products.

“Adobe intends for future versions of the Creative Suite range of products to run on Intel based Macs with no support for their installation on PowerPC systems,” said the company on its web site.

“Creative Suite customers benefit from working on the latest hardware and operating systems. The majority of PowerPC platform users have transitioned to more current configurations, prompting Adobe to suspend support for the PowerPC platform.”

The company went further, saying that it will not support existing versions of Creative Suite for PowerPCs with patches, apart from those deemed critical.

It said it was making the announcement now in order to allow customers time to get their upgrade strategies in place.
