Acer has partnered Italian sportscar maestro Ferrari to produce a bright red notebook, all dollied up with rearing black stallion logos and an optional bright red mouse.
Speaking at the East Sydney launch last night at Ferrari dealership Scuderia Veloce, Acer Australia notebook manager Lindsay Tobin said just 300 to 500 of the Ferrari-coloured notebooks would initially be available.
Dubbed the Acer Ferrari 3000, the machines will be available from Dick Smith Powerhouse and 'your local Ferrari dealer', he said.
Processing power is provided by AMD's Athlon XP-M processor 2500+.
'AMD is a business partner of Ferrari,' Tobin said.
More red notebooks may be scheduled for production if demand was high for the colour, which has been rarely, if ever, seen before in PCs, Tobin said.
John Robinson, at AMD, said that AMD had been a business partner of Ferrari for many years. AMD-based technologies were supplied to companies such as Bosch that supply components to the motor industry, he added.
Acer Computer claims the Ferrari Red colour -- the same colour used on Ferrari sportscars -- signifies passion, power, style and success.
Acer became a formal business partner of Ferrari in 2003, agreeing to supply its Scuderia Ferrari Formula One team with notebooks, PCs, servers and monitors.
The Ferrari 3000 notebook admittedly seems a fairly standard machine, apart from the colour.
It has a 15in SXGA TFT screen, an ATI RADEON Mobility 9200 graphics accelerator, 128 MB of video memory, 512 MB DDR RAM, 60GB hard disk, DVD burner, four USB 2.0 ports, integrated 802.11g standard WLAN, built-in Bluetooth functionality and other standard ports including FireWire and dedicated video ports.
The 2.93kg notebook is pre-loaded with Windows XP Home, Norton AntiVirus, CyberLink Power DVD, NTI CD-Maker and Acer Notebook Manager. RRP is $3,299 including GST.
