Acer adds the RevoView media streamer to its 2010 lineup

Acer showed off its 2010 range to the press today, and we got a look at the new Gateway, Aspire, Veriton and Timeline models.

One little item that interested us was the update to Acer's easyStore home server range, and a new Media Streamer, that Acer calls the RevoView.

The name suggests that the product has similarities to the Revo - a small form-factor PC using Nvidia's Ion platform that Acer launched in Asia and Europe. The RevoView may or may not have Ion, so far as Acer's product gurus were able to tell us. They were tantalisingly short on details about the product, though we got a close up look at it.

It offers video outputs via composite, component and HDMI. IT doesn't support DivX file format, but it does play standard AVI, MP4, Mov, VOB, RMVB and more, as well as a few obscure codecs.

There's no word on whether Acer has content deals with Australian providers to expand the media streamer's scope, but you can view photos, video and online sites such as YouTube direct through the RevoView, as well as listening to music.

We'll look forward to seeing what else it's capable of once we get one in for review.

It's also worth noting that the Revo looks set to get a local release, with an upgraded Atom and Ion, if its presence at the Acer launch today is any indication.

Acer easyStore home server

The easyStore we've seen in a previous model (reviewed in the June issue of PC Authority) - the easyStore H340 used an Atom N230, while the new version - so far as well can tell - will use an N410, which offers better power management and a little more power. The new version doubles the amount of RAM to 2GB, but like its predecessor, runs Windows Home Server.

You can backup from connected networked computers, or backup an external hard drive by plugging it into the easyStore directly. 

In addition, via the easyStore's web interface, you can access any stored data, or even your home computers, using a Windows Live login.

The 1TB base model starts at $599 RRP, which isn't as cheap as the Asus TS mini, but from our previous experience with the easyStore, it's likely to be simple to use.

Acer easyStore allows you to include up to 8TB of storage, though the base model comes with iTB.
