As the market for 4G LTE continues to gain local traction, it's been announced that trials are already underway in Japan on 5G.
NEC is teaming up with one of Japan's leading carriers NTT DOCOMO to test 5G, which is capable of exceeding the mind-boggling speed of 10Gbps.
The new capabilities are intended to cope with and support wider scale usage and traffic compared to current bandwidths offered on LTE spectrums.
In theory this will mean improved high-definition video transmission as well as a faster overall browsing experience.
The two companies aims to launch the service in 2020.
"We are confident that NEC will contribute to the early establishment of 5G technology by leveraging our Small Cell and SDN technology and know-how," said executive VP of NEC Corporation, Shunichiro Tejima.
Beyond the consumer launch in 2020, it's expected these technologies will be utilised in a range of fields, including public safety for communications in times of disaster or emergencies and M2M for classrooms and medical practice.
