3 launch Sydney HSDPA network

Mobile telco 3 has announced that it has upgraded its Sydney networks to become HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) enabled.

HSDPA is a packet-based mobile telephony protocol used in 3G radio networks to increase data capacity and speed up transfer rates.

With the upgrade, 3 Mobile customers will be able to access data speeds that will range from 600 kbps to 1.5 Mbps with theoretical maximum speeds of up to 3.6 Mbps.

The overhaul follows the upgrade of 3's Brisbane network in December. Melbourne, Adelaide; Canberra and Perth are scheduled to be completed by the end of March, the company said.

3 currently offers a handful of business-grade handsets for use over the HSDPA network and will roll out a consumer range once the national upgrade is complete.
