The XPS 15 is part of the new lineup of XPS models announced by Dell this week. Unlike the 13 and 14 Ultrabooks, this is a 'normal' laptop that uses shares the same design.
Open the box and everything from the presentation of the Dell logo to the machined Aluminium lid screams Macbook. Once out of the box however, the comparisons soon cease.
Unlike the XPS 13, which uses carbon fibre to reduce weight, the base of the 15z is built from Silicone for better heat dissipation and lower costs.
The Palm rest is made from magnesium alloy and is coated with a special paint that gives it a soft, rubberised feel. Like the XPS 13, the 15 employs a thin bezel on the screen in order to bring down the overall footprint of the chassis.
On the left side sit three USB 3 ports, Mini-DisplayPort, HDMI and a Gigabit Ethernet port with a folding hatch.
On the right side is a slot-loading optical drive (a feature absent from its ultrabook siblings) as well as a card reader, Kensington lock and audio in and out.
