We take a look at some of the biggest hosting acquisitions, and which companies make up the biggest players today.

Crucial acquires AVS Networks, then is acquired by Digital Pacific

Four months later, Crucial itself was acquired by rival Digital Pacific for "double-digit millions", with chief executive Ijan Kruizinga stepping down after the transaction. Crucial continues to operate as a standalone hosting company.

Crucial started in a student bedroom in Bondi, and ranked No.42 in the 2014 CRN Fast50 with $4.2 million that year.

VentraIP acquires customers from Servers Australia

The deal allowed the two companies to focus on their own corners of the market. VentraIP stopped selling dedicated servers, to focus on virtual and shared web hosting, marketing Servers Australia to its customer base instead. Servers Australia, meanwhile, focused on dedicated servers and infrastructure-as-a-service.

Fluccs acquires Exigent, hosting business from HostGenius

Weeks later, Fluccs acquired the hosting business from HostGenius, while itGenius retained the domain name registration business. itGenius managing director Peter Moriarty said the company was looking to divest from hosting to focus on its core Google Cloud and Dialpad VoIP businesses.

Seven months later, VentraIP acquired one-man hosting provider Profound Hosting, gaining 1500 new customers in the process. The customers were migrated to VentraIP, while Profound ceased trading.
