Marissa Mayer – Yahoo Mayer was appointed Yahoo chief executive on July 17, 2012. Her mission? To turn the venerable internet portal around. One of her first moves was – controversially – to ban Yahoo staff from working at home. Prior to Yahoo, Mayer was a prominent Google employee. She was the 20th person employed by the search giant, holding key roles in search, maps books and Gmail. She was also a strong proponent of Google’s minimalist home page look.

Sheryl Sandberg - Facebook Sandberg has been Facebook’s chief operating officer since 2008, and was promoted to the board of directors – the first woman to do so – in 2012. Prior to Facebook, Sandberg was vice president of global online sales and operations at Google. Sandberg is also well known for her 2013 book 'Lean In: Women, Work and the will to Lead'. The has sparked wide-ranging discussions about womens’ roles, particularly in the technology industry and in government.

Virginia Rometty – IBM Appointed to the office of chief executive in 2012, Rometty is the first women to hold the top job at IBM. Prior to being elevated to the top office, Rometty held positions at IBM including senior vice president, and group executive for sales, marketing and strategy. Rometty has a bachelors degree in computer science and engineering. More recently, Rometty began a clear-out of IBM staff following a period of flat earnings at Big Blue.

Meg Whitman – HP Whitman has taken HP in hand following the turbulent period associated with former chief executive Leo Apotheker. Prior to HP, Whitman spent ten years at online flea-market eBay, leading the company from 30 employees and $4 million in revenue to 15,000 employees and $8 billion in revenue. Whitman also had political ambitions, campaigning as a Republican for the Californian office of Governor. It is said she spent more on her electoral tilt than any political candidate in American history. She lost.

Ursula Burns – Xerox Burns is the first African-American woman to hold the top office at a Fortune 500 company. She joined Xerox in 1980 as an intern, returning to join permanently in 1981 following the completion of her master’s degree. For the following ten years she worked in various product and planning roles, and was subsequently named vice president for global manufacturing in 1999. In 2009 she was named chief executive, succeeding Anne Mucahey, who remained as chair until May 2010.

Safra Catz – Oracle Catz is a success story in the notoriously combative environment at Oracle, where she holds the role of chief financial officer, reporting to founder and chief executive Larry Ellison. Catz joined Oracle in 1999 after a successful career as a banker. In 2001 she joined the board, and was given the role of president in 2004. According to Fortune magazine, Catz is the highest paid woman among the Fortune 1000 companies.

Cher Wang – HTC Wang is co-founder and chair of HTC, a Taiwanese maker of smartphones, as well as of Via Technologies, a chipset manufacturer. Wang studied in California, earning a master’s in economics in 1981. She founded Via in 1987, and HTC in 1997. She is also a prominent philanthropist.

Amy Hood – Microsoft Hood rose to the office of chief financial officer at Microsoft in May 2013 after a successful ten-year stint at the company. Prior to taking the top CFO office, she was CFO of the business division, overseeing deals such as the acquisition of Skype. Hood has a reputation as a straight talker, unafraid to state her views. Prior to Microsoft, she spent 8 years at Goldman Sachs.

Sun Yafang – Huawei Not a lot is known about Sun. She holds a degree in engineering, and has been chair of Chinese telecommunications equipment manufacturer Huawei since 1999. A CIA report has said she has links to the People’s Liberation Army, although this has not been confirmed by independent sources.

Mary Meeker – Venture capitalist Famed for her annual overview of the internet, Meeker has a reputation for spotting the next wave in tech trends – and then capitalising on them. She began her career in 1982 as a stockbroker, and then became an analyst covering the tech sector for Salomon Brothers. In 1995 she worked on the IPO for Netscape, and then on the Google offering in 2004. In 2010 she left her position as managing director at Morgan Stanley, and became a partner at the storied Silicon Valley venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caulfield & Byers.
