In pictures: Equinix opens phase two of SY3 data centre

Inside the latest build-out of the state-of-the-art facility.

Equinix has opened phase two of its Sydney 3 (SY3) International Business Exchange (IBX) data centre, here bathed in the blue lighting that is synonymous with its facilities worldwide. Phase two has space for 1000 racks of equipment.

One of two colocation halls built out in phase two of Equinix SY3. The other already features the racks of Amazon Web Services. The data halls feature a 1.15 metre raised floor, with optional weight reinforcement for heavier kit, and operate at 22 degrees celsius.

Equinix offers everything from half a rack to hundreds of racks for customers. The orange boxes are Power Distribution Units.

Once the third and final phase of SY3 is completed, the IBX will provide 72,850 square feet and capacity for 3,000 cabinets.

Equinix's onsite network operations centre at SYD3. The data centre provider can also monitor SYD3 from its other two Sydney data centres and a facility in Singapore.

Customers can remotely access temperature and humidity information about the data hall, but Equinix does not offer the rack-level monitoring promoted by competitor NextDC. Instead the company allows customers to bring in their own smart rails if they desire more granular monitoring.

Equinix representatives said one reason Amazon Web Services chose its facility in Sydney was that it uses repeatable processes from global Equinix facilities, many of which host AWS already.

And thus begins the obligatory plant tour that comes with all data centre visits. Equinix's plant sits below the ground floor, but the company insists it is above the 100-year flood mark.

The outside of Equinix's SY3 data centre. This used to be a Government paper store, and was curiously enough designed by Harry Seidler. Trucks could literally drive into the facility to deliver bulky paper suppliers - making the foundations ideal for a data centre. With only one phase left to build out, it is far more polished than iTnews' first visit, where we parked our car in the space that is now Phase Two.

Security includes biometric access, plus a fairly long man-trap.
