In our field, the hardest employees to find are technical people. In the cloud space, we are looking for a combination of multiple technical skills. The traditional IT approach is to go with storage, networking or compute – and they are silos. But in cloud you need people with a combination of all three who know how to apply them together. Most people have one of these skills or if you are lucky you find a person with two, and then you upskill them to the other one. Compute skills are the easiest to find. People come out of university with compute skills – they build servers – then we can supplement that with storage or networking. Combining those three is what we call the cloud architect. It’s a new skill set where multiple areas are converging. That is what we are looking for.

Finding the right mix of good attitude and energy, technical knowledge and skills can be a challenge, though we don’t struggle too much. We have recently hired a number of new team members across Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. We are looking for a mix of skills: technical staff like Microsoft web and applications developers, BI consultants, SharePoint consultants, Dynamics CRM and ERP consultants. Also more sales executives, across states as well. We’ve recently taken on a few business analysts too. We are starting to see more diversity in the technical skills we have brought into the business of late. This has evolved and grown to recruiting in SQL server data platform and BI, SharePoint, CRM, ERP, and more cloud-based expertise.

When searching for service desk engineers, the hardest to find are candidates who have had at least one year’s experience on a service desk who also have the appropriate Microsoft Windows Server, Exchange and strong networking skills. We look for qualifications or experience in Microsoft, Symantec, VMware, Cisco, Citrix, Fortinet, Netgear, Dell, HP and StorageCraft. The hardest sales skills to find are candidates with experience in selling business-to-business, IT-related professional services. Our philosophy is to hire slowly; we are not interested in just filling the role, we are looking for someone who will be a perfect match for our culture and has the corresponding sales, technical or administrative skills we are looking for.
