NEC signs $134m Transport for NSW contract

Transport for NSW will hand NEC $134 million over the next five years to take over its end user computing functions, sister publication iTnews can reveal.

Last November the agency confirmed it had officially signed IBM as the data centre partner for its massive next-generation infrastructure services (NGIS) overhaul in a $99 million deal due to last five years.

IBM had been one of two providers down-selected as preferred tenderers for two key bundles of work under the project.

The other bundle, for end user computing, had been tentatively set aside for NEC.

Transport for NSW has now officially signed NEC as its new end user computing partner in a deal worth $134 million over the next five years.

Under the contract, NEC will handle 25,000 desktop PCs and as many as 10,000 mobile devices for the department.

It will also deliver a new consolidated collaboration platform to the Transport cluster of agencies.

The NGIS scheme also included a networking bundle of work, which will see one provider appointed to manage network services and another to look after voice and mobile.

Transport for NSW told iTnews it planned to award the contract for the fixed voice/mobile tender "shortly".

The managed network services bundle is still in the tender process and is not expected to be awarded for some time.
