Vocus more than doubles profit

Australian data centre and comms provider Vocus Communications has posted a 153 percent increase in net profit, attributing the result to its fibre and internet business lines.

NPAT shot up almost $8 million to $12.9 million, with revenue also growing by $25 million to hit $92.3 million for the year ending 30 June.

"We have delivered another record result, which is a testament to our clearly developed strategy aligned to increasing demand for data coupled with cloud computing and IT outsourcing," said cheif executive James Spenceley.

The company has increased its revenue every year since its listing on the ASX in 2010, when it generated $17.5 million of sales.

In a statement to the ASX, Vocus reported that its fibre and ethernet unit saw the fastest growth, up 87 percent in revenue, followed by internet, up 39 percent. A full year contribution from its 2013 acquisition, Ipera Communications, also added to sales.

The Sydney-headquartered provider also raised $48.7 million before expenses through a March share issue "to take advantage of future growth opportunities".

In May, Vocus bought out 50,000 DSL customers from failed entities iBoss and One Telecom at a net cash cost of $400,000, according to the annual report.

The new financial year has already proven to be action-packed for Vocus. In July, the firm purchased New Zealand fibre provider FX and renewed its contract with its biggest IP transit customer, Vodafone New Zealand. Last month, ASG sold its Perth-area data centre to Vocus in a $11.7 million deal.

"Continued demand for data and data services, and trends to outsource IT requirements should underpin Vocus' delivery of communications and data centre services in financial year 2015," said the company's statement to the ASX.
