Microsoft is working on its own version of Google Glass, testing prototypes of connected glasses.

The move, reported by The Wall Street Journal, highlights Microsoft's shift to devices - and desire not to miss out on key sectors.

The company is also reported to be working on a smartwatch, with reports suggesting it was sourcing 1.5-inch displays earlier this year, putting it in direct competition with Google Glass and Samsung's Galaxy Gear.

While Microsoft is trying to catch up in mobile, it remains to be seen whether there's even a significant market for wearable devices.

However, as Topology Research told The Wall Street Journal, the success of wearable technology will largely depend on price, with analyst Jason Tsai saying current prices are too high to attract most consumers, and predicting manufacturers will have to drive down costs.
