A study released this week by ABI Research claims that ZigBee is "the next revolution in wireless technology".
The study predicted that there would be 80 million ZigBee devices in circulation by the end of 2006.
ZigBee, which is based on the still-unratified 802.15.4 standard, provides short-range wireless connections that are suitable for both industrial and home applications. The technology is specifically is considered suitable for controlling systems and appliances.
However, the report also said that many vendors are more comfortable with the industrial market than the home market.
"Some are waiting for ratification of the ZigBee standard and for the ZigBee home market to develop," Chris Lopez, an ABI analyst said in a statement. "A few others are forging ahead, hoping to win consumers' trust early in the game."
