Windows 7 on business PCs gets an extension

PCs running Windows 7 will remain on sale to business users until at least early 2015, if not longer, Microsoft has said.

Last year, Microsoft announced that new PCs preinstalled with Windows 7 Home Basic, Home Premium and Ultimate would no longer be sold after 31 October 2014, meaning that new hardware customers would be pushed onto Windows 8.

At the time, the company also suggested the end-of-sale date for Windows 7 Professional would be the same, but eventually admitted that was an error.

The end-of-sale details for that edition have now been updated on Microsoft's website - as spotted by Windows watcher Mary Jo Foley - but a new date hasn't actually been stated.

Instead, Microsoft has simply said the date is "not yet established", and has promised to give businesses at least a year's warning of the eventual discontinuation of Windows 7 Professional.

The same Microsoft page that lists end-of-sale dates for Windows 7 also states that mainstream support ends on 13 January 2015. But Foley reported Microsoft as explaining that anyone buying a PC with Windows 7 Professional installed would receive extended support via the OEM to cover any gap after the end of mainstream support.
