A Dutch company has been caught pirating the source code from local software developer Unify Solutions.
Unify is the developer of an identity management solution called FIM Event Broker, which is a real time event management solution for Microsoft’s Identity Management platform.
According to Unify’s chief technology officer, Shane Day, the company became suspicious when the Dutch company, Traxion Solutions, was matching it feature for feature with new releases.
“Having said that, this is normal software industry practice, to match features,” Day told CRN.
The situation developed further when Unify undertook some competitive analysis of Traxion’s software and got a digital certificate error message.
“And the message and certificate were one of ours,” Day said. “We did some digging and it turned out they had copied some of our software.”
It wasn’t an espionage situation, said Day. “They simply reverse engineered the software.”
Unify engaged a local law firm, which subsequently engaged a Dutch law firm. Court action was undertaken in the Netherlands. “We ended up coming to a settlement out of court,” said Day.
