Total email fail for NSW schools

Large numbers of teachers and administration staff with the NSW department of education were without email for up to two and half days last week, CRN can confirm.

According to an internal NSW department of education email circulated last Thursday cited by CRN:

"We apologise for the inconvenience the email and system disruption has caused and appreciate your patience while Information Technology worked to rectify the situation. We understand how difficult this must have made functioning over the last two days in your schools and classrooms.

“Please note that your mailbox was completely unavailable between 5:00pm Monday, 17 June and early Thursday, 20 June 2013. While your email is functioning some schools and student distribution lists won’t have everyone included at this stage - a notice will be posted on the portal when all these lists are up.”

It is not yet known what caused the outage.

In 2008, Google partnered with systems integrator SMS Managament and Technology to win a three year, $9.5 million deal to provide email services to 1.3 million students from across NSW. NSW teachers are however using Microsoft Exchange for their email.

The NSW department of education did not respond to request for comment at the time of publication.

More to come.
