The biggest Mobile World Congress 2014 smartphone news so far

LG will be heading to Mobile World Congress with its head held high, thanks to the solid foundations laid by the five-star Nexus 5 and award-winning G2.

Sadly, the latest rumours point to a G3-less MWC and it's likely that the G3 will instead launch just before IFA in September, which is when the G2 first took to the stage last year.

Unlike the G3, the LG G2 Mini will be making an appearance in Barcelona.Officially announced before MWC kicks off, the EU variant has a 960 x 540 4.7in display, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, 1GB of RAM, and an 8MP camera. Latin American gadgeteers will be treated to an Nvidia Tegra 4i processor and 13MP camera. 4.7 inches puts the G2 Mini up there with the HTC One in terms of size, but we'll let you know just how small it is when we see it in the flesh next week.

LG has already revealed its Samsung Galaxy Note competitor, the G Pro 2, but we're still looking forward to wrapping our hands around it at Barcelona. It's got a 5.9in full HD screen, quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, 3GB of RAM innards, and a 13MP camera with OIS+, 4K video and 120fps full HD slow motion capture.

It also features a number of useful software tweaks including the ability to unlock itself with a specific screen tap pattern. You can also shrink the screen down for easy one-handed use.

LG is also expected to reveal a slew of Android 4.4 KitKat-powered smartphones – the LG D830, LS740, D410, D320 and MS323.

As for what they're called? We'll have to wait till Barcelona to find out.

Sony XPERIA Z2 struts its stuff

Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800 processor and 3GB of RAM should have Android 4.4 KitKat running smoother than a grease-covered cheetah, while a 1080p (no, not QHD as previously thought) 5.2in display will increase the screen real estate by 0.2 inches over that of the Xperia Z1.We were impressed with Sony's Xperia Z1 Compact when we wrapped our mitts around its 4.3in screen at CES, and Mobile World Congress could see the arrival of the Sony Xperia Z2.

Looking at the leaked photos, it looks like Sony's managed to cram in the slightly larger screen while simultaneously slicing the bezels down to size.

A 20.7MP camera finishes off the spec list and while impressive, the Xperia Z2 could pale in comparison to the LG G3 and Samsung Galaxy S5 – both of which will sport QHD screens and faster processors.

Sony will also have a tasty treat for tablet fans in the form of the Xperia Z2 Tablet. The latest rumours point to a 10.1in full HD display (sorry QHD fans), quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon and 3GB of RAM innards, along with an 8MP camera, microSD support, a whopping 6000mAh battery and an insanely thin 6.4mm waterproof body.
