Telstra cuts 300 jobs

Telstra has announced it will reduce its headcount by 300, which may result in redundancies.

A Telstra spokesperson said it would primarily inpact back-of-house roles. “We can confirm that we are proposing changes to our Retail business, which is responsible for Telstra’s consumer and business customers."

The spokesperson said the carrier was reducing the numbers of layers in its operational teams so "everyone is closer to our customers".

"The proposed changes are necessary for us to become a more customer experience-led organisation," the spokesperson added. "The proposal will mean some roles will no longer be required, but new roles will be created."

The spokesperson said Telstra was consulting with employees and unions on the proposal.

According to an article published by The Age, the job cuts are part of an overhaul of the telco's retail business.

"We know this is not easy for the people affected and we will be doing all we can to help them during this time, including making available redundancy entitlements."

This is the second announcement of job cuts in Telstra's customer services area this year. In July, the telco announced the cut of 326 employees from the customer services area.

In August, Telstra announced it was going to cut 200 jobs across global finance and service operations businesses with the possibility of offshoring part of these roles.
